A Set of Lovebirds
by Marian Calabro
I want to fly through this small wooden frame,
burst the glass, grow real feathers again.
I came from China.
What am I doing in Kearny, New Jersey?
There are two of us, a set of lovebirds.
Exotic. Our colors, pink and blue and green,
stand out on a watercolor background
of a pagoda painted by hand.
What do they know of temples here?
I want to break free, not hear human language,
sit in treetops, tease cats who sit in windows,
make a nest, feather it,
soar on currents to South America
for the winter.
Thank you for joining us to Write Around the World!
For the rest of the summer, watch our blog! We are sharing writing from AWA’s yearly marathon fundraiser, which happened this year all-online throughout the month of May.
We offer this series in appreciation for the incredible community of writers and workshop leaders that sustain us. If you’re inspired and would like to be part of the fundraiser, please donate!
