The Vest That I Got Married In

by Elizabeth Wolf

I found my wedding outfit
bit by bit
piece by piece.
The silk shell- ivory white-
was part of my traveling attire
and had been all over the country
and around the world.
I wore it with a green silk skirt
pleated
twirling
like an afternoon turning to
glowing evening, a starry starry night
dancing to the Grateful Dead.
Over it all the beautiful embroidered
vest, soft and black and decorated
with white stitching and beads,
that I found in a consignment shop
when I wasn’t looking. I fell in love
with the vest and when I put it on,
it perfectly fit. It fit my body and my
life and the occasion, a sunset wedding
on a secluded beach. In pictures
I’m barefoot, happy, floating.
The pictures outlasted the marriage.
The memories outlasted the vest.
But for one glorious afternoon
everything was beautiful and nothing
that came after can take that away.

We offer this series in appreciation for the incredible community of writers and workshop leaders that sustain us. If you’re inspired and would like to be part of the fundraiser, please donate!
